The Many Colours of Heucheras

Growing plants for their decorative foliage is not a new trend, but it is a growing trend.  Hostas are well known for their wide range of leaf colour, size and texture. I encourage you to look around your local garden centre for more choices with attractive foliage.

My gardens are full and I really don’t have room for more perennials.  However, I could not resist buying these Heucheras while visiting my local Home Hardware garden centre this morning. The fact that these particular plants are part of the Mark’s Choice line did not influence my decision.  I just couldn’t ignore their stunning colours.

Heuchera are also known as Coral Bells.  They are a great choice for container planting, borders and mass plantings.  I plan to mix all colours together in a mass planting.

Hardiness: Coral Bells are hardy to zone 4.

Exposure: They prefer a location in partial sun.  This means, they should be shaded from mid-day sun.

Maintenance: Remove dead foliage in the spring with sharp pruners.

Bloom time: June through September.  While many gardeners will grow Coral Bells for the foliage, they do produce delicate flowers.
