Water Cooler TidBits
I spend a good deal of time outdoors, whether I’m working in my own garden or checking out someone else’s. But, just like every one of you, I spend some of my time indoors relaxing. Sometimes, I come across some really neat things that I just have to share.
I found this story fascinating. After a pair of falcons created a nest in an abandoned flowerbox, they became an Internet sensation (at least to the birders among us). The birds as a species have come a long way: as the article states, “Decades after being listed as critically endangered, the Peregrine Falcon was removed from federal list of endangered and threatened species in 1999, thanks in large part to banning of DDT in 1972 and widespread captive breeding and release efforts.”
The article is definitely worth the read and the accompanying photography just adds to the experience.
Canadian Wildlife Federation Photo Contest
Are you a photographer? Do you have an amazing photo you’d like to share with thousands of Canadians? There are five categories: Connecting with Nature, Canadian Landscapes, Focus on Fauna, Finding Flora, and Home is Habitat. Deadline for submissions is October 31.
If you just want to look at some winning photos, they make it pretty simple, too! Check out the Gallery of Winners.
Halloween is right around the corner. Why not adopt a bat? The Canadian Wildlife Federation is making it easy to help out the little brown bat, a species suffering from a fungal disease called white-nose syndrome.
By supporting research, you are helping find a solution to a problem that could cause the extinction of this species. They also provide bat-house kits and t-shirts.
Waste Reduction Week (October 19-25)
This one really hits home with me. I’m a big supporter of recycling, reusing whenever possible, and composting. If you’re doing all of these things, good for you! Why not consider hosting or participating in an event. Their homepage will direct you to the events that are going on in your area and how to participate as an individual, school, or business.
If nothing else, take the time to examine your recycling habits and focus on areas where you can improve.
Well, that’s it! This should be a good amount of information to take with you to the water cooler at work tomorrow!
